The Specifications
The requirements for motorcycles used for the test (minimum test vehicles or MTV) are:
Category A1: Motorcycle without sidecar, must be at least 120cc and no more than 125cc, power not to exceed 11kw (14.6bhp), Capable of at least 90km/h (55mph).
Category A2: A motorcycle without a sidecar, of at least 395cc with a power output between 25 and 35 kW (33bhp and 46.6 bhp). No upper engine size limit, but the power-to-weight ratio must not exceed 0.2kW/kg and it must not be derived from a motorcycle of more than double its power. Since the beginning of 2013, the power requirement is between 20 and 35 kW.
Category A: Category A: A motorcycle without a sidecar, must be at least 595cc with a power output of at least 40kw or (53.6bhp).
Different requirements may apply to disabled riders.
Licenses by age
- 16 + Moped (AM Licence)
- 17 + 125 cc (A1 Licence)
- 19 + Medium-sized bike (A2 Licence)
- 21 + Any bike of choice (A2 Licence + 2 years experience + test)
- 24 + Any bike of choice (A Licence)
